Patrick is a 13-year old boy diagnosed in May 2016 with Ewings Sarcoma of the leg (cancer that forms in bones or in the soft tissue around bones). He is being treated at the Children's Cancer Institute at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center. Patrick received very intensive chemotherapy, all of it as an inpatient, and in August he underwent 12 hours of surgery on his leg. He is presently doing well and continues to receive chemotherapy, but requires assistance with all activities of daily living. He will receive several more months of chemotherapy which will be followed by extensive physical therapy. Patrick lives with his parents and younger sister. His mother has taken extended leaves of absence from her teaching job to help care for Patrick and his sister, and Patrick’s father, whose earnings are commission based, has also taken significant time off from work. Financial assistance from The Jillian Fund has helped the family cope with the significant loss of income and focus on caring for Patrick during his difficult treatment and lengthy recovery.
