In 2012, following a year-long process of attempting to determine the cause of unexplained pain, Laura was diagnosed with signet ring cell adenocarcinoma, an extremely rare form of cancer. Following her initial surgery, Laura transitioned to The Institute for Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders where she underwent treatment for approximately six months. Following treatment, Laura worked to regain her former life, including starting her second year of college. Several months later, however, Laura relapsed, and underwent another surgery followed by a rigorous chemotherapy protocol. Currently, Laura is preparing for another surgery as her illness has returned, and her overall prognosis is guarded. The Jillian Fund has provided financial assistance with certain living expenses such as rent and utilities and for medical related transportation needs, allowing Laura’s mother to be present with her daughter and provide vital emotional and medical support.
